How Nature Holds a Blueprint for Order

how nature holds a blueprint for order

This image reminded me how much Mother Nature continues to teach us if we slow down long enough to look.

This work comes from Swiss artist Ursus Wehrli and his project The Art of Clean Up. He takes everyday scenes and objects, or even famous artworks, and reorganizes them neatly by size, shape, or color. His work encourages us to ask deeper questions about how we define order.

In the top image, the evergreen branch is shown as it exists in nature. In the bottom image, the same branch is taken apart and arranged into neat rows. Every piece is there, but something important is missing.

We tend to assume that breaking something down helps us understand it better. But nature tells a different story. Real structure and purpose come from how the pieces work together, not from how neatly they can be arranged.

🔹 This is true in ecosystems.
🔹 It is true in organizations.
🔹 It is true in communities.
🔹 And it is true in the way we approach complex challenges.

The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. When we isolate the pieces, we can lose the underlying order that was already present. But when we zoom out and see the relationships, the pattern emerges.

As we think about sustainability, innovation, AI, and leadership, I find myself returning to this simple reminder. Nature has already solved most of the problems we are trying to figure out. The answers are often hiding in plain sight.

Order lives in the whole. Chaos lives in isolation. And nature keeps showing us the blueprint for a more connected and resilient future.

âť“ What is an example in your own work or life where stepping back to see the whole changed your understanding of the parts?
